Analysis of This Is England

  • This lesson we analysed the Warp Film 'This Is England'. the film was released in 2006 to film festivals how ever to the general public it was released in 2007. The production company was Warp Films, Big Arty was a co-producer. However, companies such as EM Media and BFI put money into the film enabling it to be produced. Optimum Release (now called StudioCanal) is also listed under production because they put money into the film before release.
  •  Shane Meadows was the director of This Is England. Shane Meadows is known as a Auteur, this means that, as a director he has a very distinctive style, he also basis his films on serious social issues. Otherwise known as Social Realist genres. Social Realist films, such as This Is England are based not he harsh reality and hardship of everyday life in a small town. This Is England is classified as a Social Realist because it is not based around the upper class london that we see in Working Title films such as Bridget Jones Diary. This Is England is set in the midlands in a working class environment which people would not associate with the Britain that everyone knows. Shane has also directed other films such as Le-Donk and Dead Mans Shoes.
  •   This Is England was a surprise hit to the film industry. Usually independent films don't have any screenings outside of the UK. However in the end This Is England ended up with 14 screenings in the USA,wit only starting at 1. In the USA the box office was $328k. The length that it was run for was 15 weeks. In many ways this is a negative sign and that This Is England didn't do as well and initially planned because it had to be in cinemas for longer to get the amout of money intended. However in the UK the Box office alone reached $1.3M. Which in $0.2M off the budget (at $1.5M). This is extremly good for an independent  film. Apart fromt the UK the natrional gross product reached over $1Million in France and Sweden.

  1. Good, but think about presentation!
