Pretty in pink analysis 2

PRETTY IN PINK OPENING SCENE.

Opening Weekend ; $6,065,870 (USA) (2 march 1986) (827 Screens)
Production Dates : 1985
Filming Dates: 22 june 1985 - 12 october 1985

After the paramount ident we are the first title " paramount pictures presents " , the white sans serif font on the black background signifies a documentary style film. It is smart and sophisticated which could convey the type of it is soon to be.

The opening shot shows an extreme long shot of a wagon driving down the street of a run down dark not very well maintained neighbourhood. This is an automatic signifier to the type of lifestyle that the protaganist may live.

After we are shown then wagon the camera pans around the area that the opening is set in. We are shown a rail way line that seems to be abandoned and unused and an uncared for 'field' which really just looks like concrete with occasional patches pf grass. The contrast between the title " pretty in pink " and the background image contrast immensely. The background id not pretty and is not pink , "pretty in pink " also makes you think of very proper upper class ladies that live in big houses in wealthy neighbourghoods , but the background could not be any more far from that.

After we are introduced to the protagonist through a sequence of extreme and close up shots . The shots show her getting ready for example getting dressed , putting jewellery on and putting makeup on. After around 15 extreme close up shots of her getting ready we are finally introduced to her along with the first dialogue in the opening scene.

This shot is a medium shot showing our protagonist from the waist up. She is typically wearing all pink which links to the title " pretty in pink" . As she walks out of her bedroom she shouts " Dad its seven thirty". The act of her shouting her dad to get up and not the parent shows that she is responsible and that maybe she looks after her dad more than he looks after her. The use of dad and not parents also signifies that she only loves worth her dafd and that the mum is not present at this time in the film.

WE are shown the girl making coffee and the proceeding to here farther room where she wakes him up and begins tho talk to him. we see shot reverse shot of them engaging in conversation which is broken up by a long shot of the bedroom. The bedroom is also a signifier to the sort of person and the lifestyle that the protagonist lives. The bare coloured walls and chairs with clothes on shows a lack of money, and as we watch we learn that the daughter us persuading her farther to go take a full time job in contrast to the past time job her currently has.

Heathers Opening

Opening conventions

Box Office: $1,110,000
Budget: $3,000,000 (estimated)
Running time: 3:06 minutes
Summary: In order to get out of the snobby clique that is destroying her good-girl reputation, an intelligent teen teams up with a dark sociopath in a plot to kill the cool kids.

The first shot that we see is a shot from behind - a girl tying her hair up with a red scrunchie. This suggests that the colour red has some significance throughout the film. The colour red represents the colour of love, but also blood. We can connote that the film may be a romantic film with a twist. There is non-diegetic music playing in the back ground. The music playing is called "Que sera, sera" which in translation is "what will be, will be". This suggests that that anything could happen - often later on in the film the protagonist dent want to kill the girls but ends up doing it anyway. The title 'Heathers; is in serif text. This suggests it is a romantic genre. It is almost as if the title has been written. the fact it is in pink suggests it is about the female generation in high school.

There is then a panning shot over to a clique of girls, in what looks to be a high class setting. We can donnote that the girls are surrounded by a white picket fence and are sitting surrounded by red roses, another symbolism of love and blood. Each girl is wearing similar clothing but each has their own colour. The establishing shot here gives us an idea that they are a group of upper class girls who are very close friends.

This screenshot shows a different angle on the girls. There is a panning shot getting closer to the girls. Giving us an idea that they are surrounded by the little white fence. Everything seems normal and nice- typical high school clique.

The girls then stand up simultaneously and walk together in a line. As the audience we wonder how they are going to get out of the surrounding plants and fencing. They find an easy solution. The girls simply walk on top of the flowers. Killing them. We see a medium shot of their legs standing on the flowers carelessly. We can connote from these violent actions that the girls may not be what they seem.

There is then a tracking shot from the left of the girls. From within the bushes. Almost as if we are watching the girls from the bushes. giving a sense of creepiness. We see they are wearing different colour. we can connote that the girl in the middle is the 'main girl' because of her placement in the scene. The middle. she is also wearing red, which seems to be a main colour of the film. We can see the title beginning to come up on the screen throughout. It is is sans-sarif text which is different tot the title 'Heathers'. The titles are white with a red shadow. White symbolises perfection and innocence. however the colour red shadowing the white letters suggests something twisted about it, we can make a connection between the 'Heathers" clique and the text type of the titles.

The camera then pans over to front facing the girls; however we still don't see their faces up close. We see their feted croquette balls and sticks, each in their own colour. The titles are surrounding the the balls. The smaller ext is much like the initial text in a writing font. Showing the contrast.

We see yellow heather go first. Suggesting she isn't the most important. We can connote that the film was set in the late 80's due to the clothing. All wearing very feminine bright coloured clothing.

We then get a close shot of the yellow heather with the red heather in the background. She is in every shot. Implying that she is a main character. The hair is a key suggestion of what era this is set in. The hair is large. There is also the first sound of diegetic dialogue. "Dammit". you don't expect this word to come from an upper class girl from the 1080's. Again giving a hint of a a twist on the typical clique in a high school in America.

Yellow heather then says "It's your turn Heather". the girl in the red then laughs and says "It's not mine!" as if they should know she was going last . The order of what they hit the ball could give us an insight to what happens to each character.  (Which dies first).

The green heather is distracted by reading the book "Moby dick". The intertextuality here suggests that a character has a distinct connection to the main character of 'Moby Dick'. The protagonist goes insane about trying to kill the whale. The book is about obsession and insanity. What we don't know yet is that the main character of 'Heathers' interacts with a boy who has psychological issues and becomes obsessed with killing this group of girls. It ends up driving her insane and she tries to kill the guy she is with. We don't see where the two heathers who have been hit the ball. This is narrative ignigma. We assume that they are hitting the balls through he gaps. However we find (after the red heather goes) that they are aiming the ball for the protagonists head.

The red ball hits her right on the head, where as the other two miss. This suggests that the girl getting hit on the head and the red heather will be the two contrasting characters.

The next piece of language is "dear Diary". This links back to the sans-serif text of being writing. The girl is centre screen, which we can connote means she is the protagonist. Or what seems to be the protagonist.

Places to film

For scene one we are filming the protagonists in their bedrooms. We are using Niamhs house and Izzys house. Even though they are in different locations when filming the girls coming out of their houses they will be neighbours.

This is where Niamhs house is. It is in Ben Rhydding.

The house to the left and the house to the right are the houses we are going to use to give the impressions the protagonists are neighbours. As you can see there is an ally way in between the houses - this is where the girls are going to walk next to each other and make eye contact. The first scene and the last scene are filmed here
For scene three we are filming in the graveyard in Ben Rhydding. To be respectful we are going to use a family members grave. They will be looking down at the grave, and we chose this grave because there are many bushes and Sarah will able to hide in the bushes and over look the girls.

tyrannosaur edits

Overview:
We shot tyrannosaur once. Then realising that the footage wasn't the quality that was necissary we decided to shoot the whole swede again. This time we worked better as a team. Everyone had different roles for each scene (there were three in total). This helped us all get a different view on the whole production of the swede. So now we get the feel of filming, directing and writing screenplays and storyboards. We all had a part in pre-production and filming production. Then we each edited our own swede.
For scene one I created the storyboard. The storyboard helpss us create the scene order and follow the film shots that we had planned to use in the filming.
For scene three i was the director. I didn't really enjoy directing, however the filming came out well with help from the cast.
Everyone worked very well together and we all had our own roles, whether it was being a cameraman or acting. Most of us took part in acting in scene two. The funeral scene. We all attending the dogs funeral.
I think that all the scene turned out well. The extreme long shot in scene two worked very well in giving the audience the feel of the situation and background that we were in. Because a swede is meant to be the opposite of the actual film, we made the funeral have many guests and everyone genually missed the dog, where as in Tyrannosaur it is simply the man burying his dog in his back garden.

Pitch - initial film idea

Overview:
The feedback that i got from the audience was overall positive. For example they liked the idea of the film being a black comedy and most people think that it the my idea behind the colour costume, separating the different cliques was simple yet effective. Howvever there were some worries when I mentioned the idea of filming in the school corridors, due to other people being around and they may not fit in the scene. I will overcome this by filming after school and then there will be minimal people in the corridor, so we don't need to get all of those peoples connect to be in my film.
there were also concerns when it came to the funeral section. However i think that it would actually be more effective if there was simply 3/4 people surrounding the grave. This keeps the eyes on the grave and makes it more suspicious of why these girls are standing over this particular grave. Leaving narrative enigma for the audience with in the first few minutes. Wich will help me create the sense of wanting to watch more for the audience. Brining them in.

Filming Tyrannosaur swede

Wednesday re-shoot of Tyrannosaur

For each scene we had different roles. We had a director, producer (who also produced the call sheet), actors, cinematographers and people to created the story boards and the screenplays. This all came together whilst shooting. The story board and call sheet are created in the order we are going to film the scene in. For all three scenes the story board and call sheets didn't exactly match up due to ad-libbing and some semiotic changes.

First we shot the Bookies scene, where the protagonist comes out of the bookies drunk and looking for his dog 'Fido'.  We changed the name of the dog to Fido because we were shooting a swede and it was supposed to be a comic version. Working title version. We filmed the protagonist coming out of the door of the bookies. Instead of filming at the bookies we filmed outside the school swimming pool. We shot a long shot of the actors coming out of the door. Then had another camera on the actors which was a medium shot. So that we could choose the different shots and which would work better. We then shot 'William' killing the dog. Instead of filing the dog being kicked we filmed from a long shot and 'William' drop kicks the dog and the dog goes flying. We film the dog flying through the air with three different camera shots.

The second shoot that we re-filmed was the funeral scene. Before we filmed the scene in the 'Hobo-centre'. We found some difficulties with this scene due to lighting. The lighting of the scene was quite dark and we found it difficult to choose angle shots that flowed well and got all the actors in. However this time we worked outside. We filmed on grass. The scene was lit up well and we used an establishing shot to get a feel of what was happening. Then moved into a closer shot. Over peoples shoulders and behind the priest (Charles).

The final scene that we shot was the protagonist (William) running into the shop and hiding. In the film Tyrannosaur the protagonist runs into a charity shop and hides behind a clothing rack. Therefore we decided to film the scene in a  mac store. Because we work in a classroom full of macs this is where we set the final scene. We filmed William running in and jumped under the desk full of macs. We again had two cameras therefore when it comes to editing we have choices of cuts and edits. When William was running in we have shots of him running in and we using a low close shot, this was giving him a sense of power. Then the lady who comes up to hum offers him a bottle of champaign instead of a cup of tea. This is again showing us the swede side of our shoot.

tyrannosaur Shot two

We have already shot the introduction to the film tyrannosaur, we need to reshoot some of the scenes:

  • Thee killing of the dog
  • entering to the apple store
  • Dog race
  • Come up with ending to cupboard scene - 'sir please come out otherwise i will have to call the police'. Walk out of shop together 'do you want to get a drink?'.
We need to re-film these shoots because at the moment some of them are not working very well. At the moment the killing of the dog is not working because we were using a paper dog. We found that it was difficult to film the physical killing.

Warp And Conventions - York 2015

We went to the Film Festival in york and went to presentations about Warp by Barry Ryan and Cinematography.

Warp
The presentation was presented by the managing director of Warp Productions, Barry Ryan. He told us about the different ways of producing and filming TV and Film. As we know Warp Productions filmed the film This Is England in 2005. The film then continued into TV. When Warp crossed over the line between Film and TV he mentioned that the technology is mainly the same, but a while ago people such as Warner Bros. were concerned if the two technologies were similar. Warner Bros were concerned when David wanted his own cast to work along side him, who had previously worked on TV. He also mentioned that creative control is another reason why there is minimal crossing into TV and Film. Both of the This Is England were Shane Meadows. However in TV it's mainly the same but you have to make the show around a certain time (52 minutes) and fit in advertisement breaks. Shae had far less creative control whilst filming.

 This Is England - Film
  • Budget - £2.2M
  • 18 Weeks to Edit
  • 6 Weeks to Film
This Is England - TV '86
  • Budget - £2.6M
  • 18 Weeks to Edit
  • 6+ Weeks to Film
Warp productions went to channel four to get money and they were offered 500k, this wasn't enough so they looked at where This Is England was popular (Australia and Indonesia). So they went to MadMan Releasing (Australia) and Non-Stop  (Indonesia). In which they got enough to produce This Is England '86.

Cinematography
  • On a typical set there will be one wide, one medium and one small camera.
  • Film making is a collaboration, everyone has a job
  • Film is still used a lot today, Spielberg still uses film
  • Breaking the code - generally you never film a woman on a 16mm because they will look distorted, always a 35mm.
  • Scripts important to make a smooth good film.
  • Film as much as you can - experience is key Ianthe industry
  •  The cinema is still important - want to feel the reaction of others around you, better than on netflix on your own, need to keep people coming to the cinema.
  • Fuji film is good - ran technicolour out of business,
Convergence
Media Convergence-
  • The Three C's: Computing, Communications and content.
  • Combinations of Information Technology and Telecommunications network companies.
Two Primary Levels-
  • Technologies: Creative Content has been converted to industry standard digital forms of delivery, through broadband or Wi-Fi.
  • To be shown on TV, Phones, Computers and digital voice recorders hooked up to TVs.
  • Industries: Companies cross the business spectrum from media to telecommunications to technology. These ca merge and become a new business all together.
Technological Convergence-
  • Different technological systems to evolve and combine towards performing similar tasks.
  • Previously separate technologies, that now share resources and interact with each other. Creating new efficiencies.

Influential films for my idea

Jennifer's Body 2009

Box Office: $31.6 million
Directed by: Karyn Kusama
Production company: Fox Atomic
Distributed: 20th Century Fox
Black Comedy, Supernatural
About a typical high school girl who meets a band and gets turned into a demon and kills boys.

Heathers 1989

Box Office: $1.1 million
Directed by: Micheal Lehmann
Production company: Cinimarque Entertainment
Distributed: New World Pictures
Black Comedy
Set in Ohio State High school, based around cliques in high school and drop of girls all called heathers.

Both films are set in what seems to be the typical american high school. In the beginning of Jennifers body we are introduced to Jennifer, the main girl of the school. In Heathers we are also introduced to what seems like the typical group of girls in an american teen film. The three girls are sitting in a garden surrounded by a fence. Everything seems to be happy and upper class. However the girls then stand up and walk on the flowers in sinc. This gives us feel not everything is so perfect and 'american'.
We also get a sense that something is no quite right in Jennifers body. Because everything is perfect for Jennifer, she has the friend, she has all the boys she wants. But when she goes out and gets invited out with the band she is so fond of we feel that something bad is going to happen.
What attracts me to both of these films that i want to involve in my initial ideas, are that it is set in a  typical high school and everything seems normal but we can never judge a book by a cover. The kindest of people can trick you by appearances.   black comedy (or dark comedy) is a comic work that employs farce and morbid humour, which, in its simplest form, is humour that makes light of subject matter usually considered taboo. Black humour corresponds to the earlier concept of gallows humour. Black comedy is often controversial due to its subject matter.

Prelim - What I've Learnt

New
Firstly

New Techniques that I have learnt whilst creating my Prelim

Firstly i had to import all the clips from the SD card to the computer. I then put these clips together and edited them.

  • I edited them by trimming the clips to flow together smoothy. This made a continuity shot.

  • After i made all these clips flow together, we were allowed to experiment with the tools available to us on Final Cut Pro.
  • To add diegetic music or titles. These can make the filming more realistic. We can also add sound effects. This can be extremely effective if a certain sound doesn't come up that was intended. For example you can add footsteps.

  • This is what my editing finally looked like. As you can see there is an assembler. I names this prelims. Then thee was Ambient Hit to bring the audience in, also to cover up some background noise that was not intended.

  • To export the film that you have just created i went to file, share and then clicked master file. This then came up with this. I named it PrelimRian2015. Then clicked onto settings and checked if the HD was okay.

Wish You were here Conventions

The conventions

Wish you were here was directed by David Leland.
The budget was $1.5M.
The Box Office was $3.8

Summary: Joel Edgerton stars as Dave Flannery, who reluctantly vacations in Cambodia with his pregnant wife Alice (Felicity Price), her younger sister Steph and new boyfriend Jeremy. After a night of partying, Jeremy vanishes without a trace. Dave and the women return to their lives, each bearing differing degrees of knowledge about what happened and slowly put the pieces of the puzzle together to find out what happened that night.
Dave reveals he slept with Steph on the beach. He goes for a walk and meets a man, who offers to take him to a small bar. Dave went and began drinking. Alice gets into an argument with Dave. She goes to Steph's house and confronts her. On the way home, she gets into a car accident and is rushed to the hospital, where she prematurely gives birth to the baby. In the end, Dave tells the police the truth of Jeremy's death

This is the opening to 'Wish you were here'. The film was produced in 1987. The film was produced and written by Davis Leland. The film is about a girl who is looked down on by the elder generations because of how she dresses and acts. her mother is dead and her dad has given up on her. (The Title refers to her mother {wishing her mother was there}). It is set in the British seaside in the 1950's.
The first think that comes up in this 'Film Four International presents..'. The title is white on a black background centre screen. White text on a black background often signifies the film being set on serious social issues and documentation. The text is sans-serif. The film genre is a British comedy-drama. The film opening is1:34 minutes long.
This comes up around 4 seconds after the 'Film Four International'. The writing is the same and the text is centre screen bringing the eyes in.

This photo of a child then fades in. This image stays on the screen for a relatively longer period of time than the titles. The image is a girl with a gas mask on. We can connote that the film may be based in the past or the past has a lot to do with the life of one of the main characters. The image is not full screen. It has been cropped and on covers the centre of the screen. Again everything seems to be in centre screen. So far we haven't actually seen any of the time period or the area that the film is set in. This is narrative enigma. Information is being with held, making us ask questions, such as who is this child, when was this. This shot comes up at around 0:10 seconds. The fades away at 0:17, which is twice the length of the first two idents.

This is the next shot. Come in at 0:18 seconds. It is on the screen alone for three seconds much ike the idents, the name Tom Bell then appears. Emily Lloyd then disappears at 0:23 listing 0:07 seconds on the screen. Tom Bell i now left and fades out at 0:26 seconds The camera is slowly revealing more of the scene. Slowly moving left. As it moves more titles of actors are put up. This isn't a very long introduction to actors. The first actress to come up in EMILY LLOYD. This suggests that she is the main character of the film. I would usually guess that this meant Emily Lloyd was famous however this was her first film. She was 15 at the time.
The title is a bold bright red, attracts your eyes to the screen. It is very contrasting in comparison to the background. Which is dull and grey. I can denote that it is the ocean, probably somewhere in England because of the dark grey skies, suggesting it isn't somewhere warm like Spain.

Tom Bell is then added to the screen. We can again denote that these are the main actors of this film. 'Tom Bell' s also in the ocean section of the screen. The text is not covering the structure that we are about to see. The filming that is being done here is crab left. Extreme Long shot to give us the full picture of where we are. The scene is slowly being revealed. Narrative enigma is a big part of this scene. His name fades in at 0:21 and fades out at 0:26 seconds.

The title of the film has now been introduced. The font of the writing has now changed. The writing is serif. Very fancy, something that you would find in a rom-com. However, Wish you were here is a drama comedy. This would be showing the drama side of the film. The writing is very dramatic and over the top.  The semiotics of this are still not giving away, much about what the film is really about.  We have now reached the actually beach. Lana. There is a man walking along the beach in a coat. Costume is very significant when creating a timely film such as 'Wish you were mine'.
The man is very far away there we are unable to see the detail. Once agian nothing has been given away. The title of the film comes in at 0:27 and then fades out like the rest at 0:32 seconds, listing 5 seconds.

The text has returned to the simple sans-serif. All of these names are the co-stars. The fact that all of them are on the screen in one shot shows us that the opening of the film will not be very long. the 'and' at the end shows us that, that is the last actor to be mentioned in the opening two minutes of the film. The rest of the titles like this last around bout 0:03 seconds each. Showing that they are less important.

The shot is getting further and further out. We can now see the whole of the man and his dog. he is wearing a long jacket and a hat. Signifying that it is autumn time in Britain. From the background it is clear that we may not be in the best area of Britain. (Sussex). The pier has a section missing. Showing that the place has not been renovated in very long. Not well taken care of. We can connote poverty in this area due to the darkness and how everything so far seems meak and no the idealist of what Britain is really like.
This shot we can see what seems to be a dark green\grey tech chair. if you compare this to Spain or somewhere warm the chair may be lighter colours and with a lighter warmer feeling background. However from first impressions it doesn't seem like the happy kind seaside that Britain stands for. The text 'Designed by Caroline Amies' is right across the chair which brings your eyes toward the detail.

The shot is now being opened up. We can see more of the bigger picture. There are more than one deck chair. There are a few, however most are spread out, why would you want to sit on your own?
The chair is slightly titled, what we can connote from this is that no one has recently sat down on this chair and that the word has moved it. The weather isn't warm.
If you look closely enough we can see a girl in pink riding a bike. Already she stands out by wearing the bright colour. Which again contrasts to the background. The fact that this person is wearing pink shows us that this could be the antagonist of the film. So the first exposed image of the antagonist is at 1:03. Before we see the antagonist we see a flock of birds fleeing an area. This brings our attention to the area. The antagonist the cones in on  bike.

This shot is at 1:06. Showing that the antagonist is quickly approaching. Suddenly from no information being exposed to a front shot of the main character. Wearing very little to say that the woman behind her is wearing a long beige coat. The woman behind her almost blends in with the background. Where as she is standing out. First of all for not wearing much and second of all for wearing pink and smiling.

We now have a side shot of the main characters face. The camera is following her. This shot type could be called a tracking shot. This is a medium shot. We can see her facial expressions and her shoulders are involved in the shot. The ocean in the background blends into the grey skies about her. This could signify the people of east sussex in the 1950s. She is standing out by what she is wearing. The main plot of this film is the fact that the older generation are sticking to the rules and the ways that they know. Blending in. Non of them particularly  have a personality. She does.

'Written and Directed by David Leland'. This is the last text that is shown in the introduction. It is in centre bottom of the screen. Our eyes are on this dancing lady. The dancing lady goes the audience a thought of when this was set in. The lady is also not wearing much, much like the girl riding he bike. The lady is dancing and asking for money. Clearly this is not the desirable job for a lady in the 50's. It is cold and wet. We can connect the girl on the bike to the girl standing and asking for money.

Finally the music fades out and we have a frontal shot of the antagonist. This is a medium close shot. She is smiling at the camera. The diegetic music then stops and there is a black out. She in a hairdressers smiling at a boy. This is where the film begins.

I would say from what has been revealed to us that the genre of this film is romantic-drama. With underlaying comedy. I can connote this from the opening because of the choice of titles, white on black to begin with. Then a very dull background with bright red sans-serif writing. The bold text stands out much like the antagonist might throoughout the film.

So far i woulddn't say there has been any binary oppositions. However seeing as it is a romantic i feel that the boy to girl binary opposite with come into place as a main element.

The music fades in at about 0:28 seconds. To start with the sound that is coming from the screen is the sound of the ocean. This is non-diegetic sound. This makes me fel like im actually at the seaside,it is far more effective than scilence. The music then fade in (diegetic) this brings you back to reality.
The antgonist then comes into the shot on a bike, as she gets closer we can hear the sound of the bike, changing gears. This now has non-diegetic and diegetic at the same time. However after tracking Emily Lloyd on the bike we see a woman dancing on a music box. The music then becomes muffeled, as if playing from a music box. We can dennote that the music is coming from the tap dancing lady (we can also hear the tap shoe). When the music stops the lasy stops dancing and it goes to a black out. This is the end to the introduction. There is  faded blackout and then it fades back into the opening scene. Which Emily Lloyd is smiling at a boy.
